The author

Charles Dickens was born in England on the 7th of February 1812. When he was 12 years old his father went to prison.

He left school and went to work in a factory. He workerd many hours in terrible conditions. In 1831 he became a newspaper reporter and he started writing short stories. A lot of people bought the magazines to read his stories.

In 1836 he wrote his first novel “The Pickwick Papers” and it was a big success. He married Caterine Hogartin in 1836 and they had 10 children.

He met many people in his life and he wrote about many of them in his novels. His books are about poverty and social problems. He wrote fourteen major novels during the industrial revolution and he became famous. He died whe he was 58 years old.

Historical Context

When Dickens wrote his novel was the period of the second industrial revolution

There were many scientific discoveries and inventions. There was a big development of railways and shipbuilding with steel.

Many weapons were built and they were stronger than the old ones.

Petroleum was extracted first in 1859 and there were many deposites in Texas. The ships started to use petroleum and fuel.

In this period electric and chemical industries were born. Dinamite was invented by Alfred Nobel in 1867. In this period were produced many medications like aspirin and also anesthetics to reduce pain.

My opinion

For me this book is very beautiful because it also talks about the children’s work in the factories and I think that this is wrong because children mustn’t work, and that they should go to school because it’s their right.

Dickens uses the Novel to give readers of the time, a dramatic understending of the deplorable social situation for England’s underclass and particularly it’s childrens. It shows the poorness of british public institutions for dealing with the poverty of children like Oliver

AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS🌎

Around the world in 80 days is an adventure novel by the French author Jules Verne. This novel talks about the story of Phileas Fogg and his waiter Passepatour. They are trying to circumnavigate the world in 80 days, to win a £20000 bet. The novel of Verne for me is very educative because through the character of Fogg we learn the true value of friendship and loyalty. We realize that winning is not always the biggest prize of all. So I reccomend it to children of my age or to anyone who is interested in adventure stories.

Oliver Twist

Oliver twist was born in 1830, a few minutes before his mother died. He lived in a workhause directed by Mr Bumble, here the boys live very badly and suffer from hunger. So Oliver comes forward to ask for more food but is locked up in a dark room. One day Mr Sowerberry went to Mr Bumble to ask him if he had a boy to have him work in his coffins shop. In the morning to wake up Oliver is Mr Claypole, the owner of the shop, during the day Mr Clayope insinuates that Oliver’s mother had been a thief so he starts beating him … the next day Oliver ran away to London where he meets Jack Dawkins who offers him a place to sleep but it also makes it enter a band of thieves with Fagin and Bill Sikes.

Oliver, however, understands the real job of the boys when they steal the wallet from a gentleman’s pocket, but Mr. Brownlow notices this and blames Oliver, who tries to escape but is catchen by the police. He explained to the police what happened so they let him go away.

Mr Brownlow takes a liking to him and provides him with education by treating him kindly.
Oliver is kidnapped by Nancy who brings him back to Fagin who forces the protagonist to steal from the Maylies’ home.
But Fagin’s plain fails, in fact Oliver is injured by a bullet in his arm. The next day t Mrs. Maylie treat Oliver’s arm.

By now Oliver lived with them but Fagin wanted him to leave and let Monks help him.
Nancy warns Rose Maylie about Monks’ plain , to kill his half-brother (Oliver) to recive the heredity. Rose then contacts Mr. Brownlow and tells him what Nency told her. Sikes discovers Nancy’s betrayal and kills her. Fagin and Sikes are arrested while Sikes manages to escape. Oliver received his part of heredity and Oliver is officially adopted by Mr Brownlow.

The Canterville Ghost

Terrible twins

The novel tells the story of an American family that according to the medal of the time, buys a castle in the UK and goes there to live. This castle is haunted by the ghost of Lord Simon who has been damned for killing his wife and who can be freed from spell only if a pure soul feels pity and weeps for him. The family consists of, father, mother and 4 children (Washington, Virginia and the two twins). The story tells how immediately an atmosphere of prank and tension is created by jokes of various kinds. But one evening the twins make a terrible joke to the ghost who, scared, locks himself in a room for two weeks and stays there until his older sister goes to talk to him. The sister hearing the true story of the ghost cries for him and in so doing Sir Simon is forgiven and given freedom. I liked the book very much the mysterious atmospheres but also a bit amusing they are better integrated, the characters are well characterized and the intertwining of the story that is created between the ghost and the girl and very beautiful interesting. The ending, then, is very mysterious and is perfectly suited to a ghost story.

the blood stain

From this story one senses the romantic spirit in the author: Oscar Wilde, most likely influenced by the Irish poetess mother with thoughts of Byronic origin. Then, however, the author develops his work in the decadent vein that in the 1800s was opposed to positivist thought. This thought was characterized by a trust in science, in fact it was in the period of the industrial revolution that brought people of the time to trust in science and at the same time to a discomfort in everyday life. This in fact leads to the birth of many currents of thought opposed to positivism such as the nihilism of Nietzsche or the mysticism of Shopenhauer, to the vitalism of D’Annunzio. Among these currents opposed to positivism there was also aestheticism, a literary form characterized by the constant search for beauty. the greatest exponent of this thought was precisely Oscar Wilde, in fact in works such as the portrait of Dorian gray this concept is very pronounced and taken to the extreme where the protagonist deceives old age by aging a painting in its place.

Oscar Wilde

As Oscar Wilde stated:  “I have the simplest tastes. I am always satisfied with the best.”
